The Birds in Yzerfontein

Yzerfontein is one of the bird rich areas of the Cape West Coast where residents and visitors can have easy access to a large number of the Western Cape bird species. This is because Yzerfontein contains varied habitats in a smallish geographic location. Examples of different habitats would be the beach and dune areas, the harbour, the urban settings, greenbelts and fynbos, farmland along the R314 and Rooi Pan (which is  a small, ephemeral salt pan that holds water after winter rains). 

The following is a list of birds commonly seen in Yzerfontein. Rareties and difficult to spot birds have been left out from this initial list, but birders should feel free to note any such species in iNaturalist (https://bewarea.org.za/inaturalist-explorer/), eBird (https://bewarea.org.za/ebird/), or by emailing us to include photos in our galleries.
